Okay, here it is October and I don't think I've had such a long absence from the blog... and there is news...! News of local shops carrying The Pumpkin Dream, and images from last Saturday's 6th Annual Halloween Trunk Show to share!
First news first, I wanted to thank a great local store here in Denver, near Washington Park, for carrying The Pumpkin Dream among its selection of books for Halloween and young readers. Pome is a great shop that frequently focuses on items for sell from local artists, so that the jewelry, clothes, scents, bags, knick knacks, and of course Halloween goodies, are not always common items found in any other store.
Did you spot it? Yes, The Pumpkin Dream has found its way to a spooky display of books, treats, candles, masks, clothing, and more, together with a group of vintage Halloween decorations and party items. (Also, as a side note, check out the awesome vintage cabinet of candy near the back of the store for more goodies for your Halloween sugar fix).
For more images, check out the larger Pome gallery of the shop now posted to the photostream on flickr:
And finally, going back in time a bit, catching up from last week, it's been almost a week now since the 6th Annual Halloween Trunk Show in Denver, yet still enjoying the vibe from a wonderful experience, and I wish to express a belated thank-you to all who braved the rare soggy weather here to come out and see the show and to those who purchased the The Pumpkin Dream and items from the Bindlegrim booth!
So many awesome vendors, and I regretted that my own time management (getting the booth together at the start of the show) was not faster so that I could take in the view before the show - however, Halloween artist Johanna Parker has an absolutely great Halloween Trunk Show gallery of the show on her flickr photostream:
That's it for now. Very busy here in the world of Halloween, and hope everyone is having a great October. I'll see if I can't write here again soon...!

6th Annual Halloween Trunk Show
I've had some great fun this past week creating graphics for the Sixth Annual Halloween Trunk Show coming this October 8th here in Denver! Using the same beloved vintage image (inset) that's come to be a part of this show's calling card, I've shaken things up just a tiny bit with graphic touches of Halloween orange and black, to toy visually with references to the number six.
The official announcement is beginning to make its way through the Halloween channels - and more news will be coming up as more information is updated on the show's new website: www.halloweentrunkshow.com.
I will be there with a large batch of Hallowe'en cards (series of nine images), the glossy and standard printed editions of the Halloween poetry book The Pumpkin Dream, and a pandora's box full of vintage finds from Halloween's past. It will be my first year at this show, with some well-known names that I'm sure you will recognize below, such as my favorite local Halloween mentor: Johanna Parker...!
See you there - and bring all of your six senses!

Paragraphs of Yellowed Print
I've been re-examining my poem for the last couple of days (now that it has come back from my editor), and reached a point in the story where I had long ago cut the following lines. It's the same point in the poem now where I need to rewrite some missteps after permanently cutting this (below) and losing storyline movement, (note: the rhyme is not very complex as this never went through very many drafts):
as floorboards from the rocker creak
a crooked finger prods your cheek
while wrinkles stretched across his frame
twitch wildly from the candle flames
his grimace shoots past tattered tomes
of leather cracked like ancient bones
while tinged and brittle documents
shed paragraphs of yellowed print
a crooked finger prods your cheek
while wrinkles stretched across his frame
twitch wildly from the candle flames
his grimace shoots past tattered tomes
of leather cracked like ancient bones
while tinged and brittle documents
shed paragraphs of yellowed print
While this was more in line with the mood of the poem, and I loved the imagery - it didn't fit the location of the action which at this point takes place on a front porch the night of Halloween. (Unfortunately the whole landscape and set of objects sound more like a castle than the small doorstep of a single family home, and I just didn't feel it worked).
While most lines are wiped out during the writing process, (and there are pages and pages of discarded lines sent to the voids of space), I suppose I had thought I might put this back in, and so it lingered at the end of my document for months. Obviously at this stage, it's definitely history, but I still enjoy this little snippet, and wanted to take a moment to recreate it here on the blog.
