The Pumpkin Dream - author notes

This third entry for Tall Tales / Shorter Days author-notes series, goes back in time to around 2004 (circa A Breif History... Part 1). This is a look backward at a particular poem, and the first Bindlegrim book which was really the birth of a holiday alter-ego. With this blog started in April 2011, the contents of that book in some form - the poetry, the illustration, as well as a vintage-style commemorative Halloween lantern has been in the Bindlegrim blog 26 times. So with that in mind, I will endeavor to discuss something new,  while keeping this entry brief...!

The Pumpkin Dream

I perhaps enjoy this poem most pre-2010, that is, as words alone, (as it is now being presented in the print version of Tall Tales Shorter Days).  Originally there was no illustration for every eight lines of rhyme, no scrolling borders of skeletons and cats, nor any trace of graphic design ding-battery scattered about the pages. At that time there was only pulse, rhyme, and sensory descriptions...

When tattered oaks of autumn lend
prophetic chatter to the wind,
and gremlins from a branch dispatch
with felon deeds upon the latch,
We trust these words illuminate
of bogymen whose hunger slake
on children in a sugar feast
the fearless know as Trick or Treat.

Not to say that the graphic work wasn't exceptional fun (!!!) - but in some ways what came next was quite distracting from the poetry. I have to admit, once I began working on the visual art, it changed my experience of the poem - like a music video can  alter the experience of a song, for better or worse. Even now, I will catch myself reciting the poetry, no visuals at hand, doing my best to mock the voice of Vincent Price or Christopher Lee as the words alone build the senses of that Halloween night's adventure...

Trembling smirks from candle beams
devour themselves in ash and steam,
as vapor licks the ailing hearts
of smoldered pumpkins in the dark.
Escaping flames from embers red
flee hoot owls hunting overhead,
where critters on the roasted bits
of pumpkin features start to rip.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because of the difficulties designing poetry for e-book formats The Pumpkin Dream poem is NOT included in the e-book version. It is only available in the print version here on Amazon or Etsy.

Well, even though Tall Tales Shorter days contains the non-illustrated version, I just couldn't write a blog entry without throwing in at least some media. Below is a little promo video for the original book The Pumpkin Dream: A Cautionary Tale from the Library of Mr. Bumble Bindlegrim to perhaps offer a touch more sense for its Halloween mood:

Free for Your Bindle...

Uh, ehr, I mean Kindle... and for iPad too...

Here is some quick day-specific news for the blog - letting folks know about this free digital book promo (1-27-2013) for the digital edition ending 12 midnight pacific time. These copies are available via Amazon for both Kindle and iPad viewing.

Screen shot of free day 1-27-2013 promo of Bindlegrim spooky collection of stories with witches, ghosts, veggie people, and talking cats....

If you are seeing this late, fret not, for during the next 90 days the book is available as a free loaner from the Kindle online library. And the book is usually priced at an affordable $2.99 (of which the author receives a humble percentage). (Note to Nook users - after that 90 days I will make this title available in that format too. Kindle Select regrettably bars other digital releases for that period, which I would argue is a bad idea for all... but I learned a lesson for the next book. Grrrr.)

For those who prefer the old school version, paperback first editions are available on Amazon too. (Please note that if you get any strangely printed copies, please return until you get a correct one). As well, the book is now available from the Bindlegrim store on Etsy. For the latter, I have ordered some stock, which I have eyeballed to be good print quality, that will be shipped direct from Ichabod's Cottage as signed copies.

Well, that's it for now, and my deepest (darkest) apologies to write and run... but Bindlegrim has more exciting mad-scientist creations mutating just around the corner... Stay tuned!

Ghost in the Machine (Tall Tales for E-Book)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *

Bindlegrim Releases New E-Book Digital Edition Horror/Humor Collection:
Tall Tales, Stranger Days

Holiday artist Bindlegrim (aka Robert Aaron Wiley) releases second edition of short story collection On Stranger Winds now in popular e-book formats for Kindle and iPad, following the release of a more traditional printed first edition.

Spooky and humorous collection of short stories Tall Tales for Shorter Days now offered free or at low cost of $3 with digital version.

January 19, 2013 - Robert Aaron Wiley (creator of Bindlegrim™) follows up printed collection of spooky stories “On Stranger Winds: Tall Tales for Shorter Days” with new e-book edition. This second edition is released through Amazon Kindle (offering Kindle and iPad formats). Depending on the customers' preferred format and memberships, the availability is very affordable - as free loaner or low purchase cost of $3 USD.

Amazon reader reviews have been positive. “The author has a wonderful ability to set an eerie scene and draw you further into the stories with delightful and/or weird characters.” (Irene Stanton, Amazon). “Time to cozy up in a bed of frosty autumn leaves under a dead oak tree and read through this wonderful book again!” (Dranem, Amazon).

The author admits backlash from at least one critic. The introductory story, The Herbivorous Witch received the following angry review after submission to a un-named magazine: "Quite frankly, I found all of the characters unlikable. The aunt was unintelligent and all the angrier for it, Solace was pretentious and bratty, Ferris was somewhat underdeveloped, and Pearl was as annoying as her mother.” The author counters, ”...the person nailed a surface reading of the characters as written, which makes me grin... The piece drew this person to finish, and was powerful enough to require an outline of offense. In my book, that's a good story!” (facebook.com/bindlegrim). The true audience for this book will get that too.

"On Stranger Winds: Tall Tales for Shorter Days" © 2012 Robert Aaron Wiley is currently available in print and e-book in both U.S. and Europe. Quality paperback, 138 pages, at $7.95 (Amazon print -edition one) and digital e-book download (Amazon Kindle - edition two). Cover art is by David Irvine (The Gnarled Branch) and Foreword by Daniel Boyer of Critical Corner.

About Bindlegrim (aka Robert Aaron Wiley)

The author cites examples like the mysterious kudzu-covered landscapes of an abandoned South as primary influences during youthful studies in fine art; a search for wonder that led him to relocate to Albuquerque and to Seattle, each for their rich support of cultural and artistic diversity. Pursuing fine art media and classical world music, the artist discovered a happier balance through the creation of recent alter ego Bindlegrim - outlet for whimsical exploration of seasonal holidays and their mix of curious imagery with inventive design.

14 Free Cupids for Pixel or Print

While visiting the office.microsoft.com templates page the other day, noticing their current selection of free Valentine templates, I re-discovered this funny little Valentine that I created while contracting there, and wanted to say a few words about this versatile Valenttine's Day Countdown Calendar which was created as something to be enjoyed in either printed format or in PowerPoint.

Cupid image created from free Clip Art library Style #1450

The opening screen (or front of the card) of this Valentine features 14 numbered doors with cupids delivering love letters through the mail. What the doors reveal is totally up to you. While the download file has already been preset with images and text - you can easily change these. (The first image below shows the doors - and the second image shows a couple of doors still closed but others revealing images and text).

I haven't had a chance to explore this myself, but I think it would be fabulous to do a version on actual paper. Basically, you would print screen the scene with closed doors, and then print screen the scene with all items revealed. On just the front image, cut in such a way that the doors would swing open. And again, you can customize the back image to contain your own text, images, photographs, etc. Glue the two pieces together around the frame of the doors - and you've got a cool interactive Valentine! (The image below is a mock-up of how this might appear, doors ajar):

If you want to do use this digitally on PowerPoint, this help article (How to create a personalized Advent calendar), while it actually discusses a similar type of PowerPoint template, (an Animated Advent Calendar I had created for Christmas), the basics hold true for updating this Valentine.

Christmas Activity / Coloring Book

Christmas time is coming around again, reminding me of some free things you can enjoy created when I worked at office.microsoft.com -- creating free holiday content from their extensive clip-art library to create free downloadable content as part of the permanent collection of the template library. (I guess the keyword there is FREE).

One day I was given a task to fill in some content gaps per public requests for coloring sheets. The goal was to come up with at least five coloring pages of animals. Well, I couldn't help but run with this project, (and betweent managing the website),  created 5 coloring books (each with around 8 pages), taking advantage of one particularly great style of art: #1450. The result was three with animals: (forest, farm, aquatic) and then, of course, Christmas and Halloween.

The Christmas book was also a bit more than just a coloring book, but was inspired by the activity books I used to receive as a kid during the Christmas vacation school break... and so in addition to pages just for coloring, there are also connect-the-dots, word jumbles, word finds, and pages for writing in your on text.

Below are thumbnail versions for your perusal - and be sure to visit the office.microsoft website for the full size Christmas Activity / Coloring Book download:

And if you like these (especially Santa there in the last image) don't forget there is full stationery set with letterhead, gift certificates, envelopes, gift tags, and more blogged about here: Summer Santa Stationery Set.

As a side note - part of the beauty of templates and of Word 2007 is the ability to customize to suit your own tastes. If you didn't catch my original blog entry (on the Microsoft Office blog) that explained the above procedure (creating Word art from the Clip Art library) -- I have recreated the content in this blog entry here.
