Cornish Litany Lantern and Postcard Set

If you haven't checked out the Bindlegrim facebook page these last few days (late January 2012), you may have missed this prototype Halloween lantern photographed in the galleries there. This first image shows Halloween lantern style #2 (The Cornish Litany) of signed limited editions available soon over the next couple of weeks. There will be 10 or less of any given style.

The Bindlegrim facebook page also has a gallery of 12 postcards images - coinciding with the release of lantern style #2. Each postcard is an image from on of the window panes of the Halloween lantern. Only 25 of each image is being printed, and these should be available mid February 2012.

The Cornish Litany Lantern (Limited Edition)

Another sneak peek at what's going on in the Bindlegrim Studios... as there was some earlier mention of vintage-style 1930's era lanterns. Those may start showing up in the next two weeks!

The initial plan is to have 5 styles, and in each style there will be 10 limited lanterns each numbered and signed by the artist.

Lantern style one pane designs are ready to go, and these are familiar friends from The Pumpkin Dream illustrated poem, with some new, small variations on images in the book. (You can catch sight of the initial pane designs on the Bindlegrim facebook page).

And for lantern style two - since there was a recent enjoyable foray into creating imagery for the Debra Meister's book A Litany...Cornish and Otherwise, it seemed only natural to dream up some new spooky ghouls and ghosts for one with a  Cornish Litany theme. And here are 6 panes of what will be that 12 pane lantern:

I really enjoyed these new spookier scenes - and a thought has occurred to do some new Cornish Litany postcards using the very same as those from the pane designs shown above. I will keep you posted, and in the meantime, don't forget Postcard One and Postcard Two limited edition Cornish Litany cards created in 2011 are for sell on etsy (signed and non-signed).

Limited Edition Cornish Litany Postcards

This is a continuation from an earlier post The Cornish Litany Commission about some special illustrative postcard art that has been created for Debra Meister (www.debrameister.com and lotsofcards.com:) who has authored a wonderful book A Litany... Cornish and Otherwise gathering a great number of these visions together from both past and present.

The images shown below (slight updates from the original works) will be limited edition postcard versions, which, by the way, should be available within the next couple of weeks as a signed edition of twenty-five.

Of the two commissioned, for the art of the first postcard, it seemed only natural to illustrate the litany in a similar style to that of The Pumpkin Dream Halloween poem, and it was great fun revisiting with some of these creatures. While many of the smaller monsters are found in The Pumpkin Dream, the central monster, the big scary tree house creature, was a welcome addition to their sinister ranks; he's got a big appetite, as you might notice on the back of the card! Yikes!

For the second card, I wanted to return to the tactile world of pen and paper. And instead of working in a surreal style, which I mentioned in the earlier blog entry, I was diverted. While viewing Debra's book again (see below), I really enjoyed ye olde versions of the postcard imagery. In many of these images a person in some type of old building is being spooked by a team of green and purple monsters crawling out of the woodwork so to speak. (The image on the postcard below was done in pen with hues created by colored pencil).

Hope you enjoyed the further peek into this commission project. Hope to post news soon about the limited edition versions. And in the meantime, here again is a full preview of the second 3rd edition (updated 1-16-2012) available on blurb! May your holiday be free from Ghoulies and Ghosties!

12-19-2011: Please Note (updated):
The author mentions that 3rd edition pricing is more affordable. Any previous pricing was for final limited copies only on the 2nd edition.

Pumpkin Dream Sketchbooks #1: Surreal

Some days before deciding (for certain) on a more vintage, representational style for "The Pumpkin Dream" there was some thought of creating pen drawings, and in a more surreal style, somewhat more akin to the pen and ink drawings seen here on wobblebox. There was really only one sketch to speak of in this mode - seen below where there was an attempt to take elements from the poem, and then sit down for a session of surrealistic doodles... (this sketch would have paired with the first eight lines of the poem):

When tattered oaks of autumn lend
prophetic chatter to the wind
and gremlins from a branch dispatch
with felon deeds upon your latch

We trust our tale illuminates
of bogymen whose hunger slake
on children in a sugar feast
the fearless know as trick-or-treat

While I would still love to find the time to do this illustration style (perhaps in some later edition down the road), the thought of trying to create 37 drawings that I would be happy with... while so many other tasks needed to also be done (this book was DIY on everything), I gave this up for something I thought would be more editable - vector art (see the first blog entry Sketchy Beginnings and/or A Brief History of The Pumpkin Dream (Part 4) - Cautionary Vectors).

Well, in going back into my sketchbooks, it appears I did almost a full round of more representational style art, and then for some reason (probably the zero budget) vacillated back toward the possibility of pen and paper once again (see below). I think this next drawing (probably inspired more so by being very tired) was a thought toward doing something sort of retro, loose, and surreal with lots and lots of negative space.  And I was apparently still trying to figure out the first lines of the poem, which were perhaps the hardest lines of the poem to complete - and there are likely hundreds of versions of the beginning)....

I guess part of me is very interested in Halloween imagery with a little surrealistic twist - and in looking back through the sketchbook - even before the idea to do "The Pumpkin Dream" was settled in my mind... I found this whimsical drawing that takes the Jack O'Lantern into some weird realms - such as the octo-pumpkin?
